  In “The Big Picture: Contemporary Art in 10 Works by 10 Artists,” Matthew Israel, Artsy’s Curator at Large, examines 10 artworks that trace the development of contemporary art. Below are a series of excerpts from his book, out March 28th from Prestel. Contemporary art is notoriously difficult to understand and can be quite intimidating. Like fanciers throughout history, modern-day Maltese owners appreciate the sweet personality and lively antics of these dogs. According to Vicki Abbott, author of The Maltese: Diminutive Aristocrat (): "He is happy, he is a clown, and he is eager to please." He is a founding member of stART () – a group of Maltese contemporary artists; a committee member of the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts (–); a committee member of Piazza Teatru Rjal since May ; and (since ) director of GOZO Contemporary – an art space on the island of Gozo that offers self-directed residencies.
